STURGEON BAY, WI – The eighth annual Steel Bridge Songfest will once again rock the Door County town of Sturgeon Bay from Thursday, June 7th through Sunday, June 10th, with a record number of songwriters and bands performing at twelve indoor and outdoor venues.

Central to the festivities is the “Construction Zone,” a weeklong songwriting marathon hosted by theHoliday Music Motel that infuses the festival with a slew of new songs each year. The songs are written and recorded at the motel and performed on stage during the festival by the writers (the “Construction Crew”*), and are later made available for sale at local businesses and through the Steel Bridge and Holiday websites. Fifty-five songwriters in every genre of music (from as far away as New Zealand) are taking part this year. This year’s festival will mark the release of the latest edition of Steel Bridge Songs, Volume 7.

– Eighteen year “Stamp Out Hunger” partnership has provided more than one billion pounds of food for people in need across the country –

United Way of Door County encourages community members to donate a bag of non-perishable items (canned foods, pasta, rice, cereal, etc) to be collected by letter carriers as they deliver mail along their postal routes on May 12th.

“Stamp Out Hunger” is a national partnership between NALC, the U.S. Postal Service, United Way, the AFL-CIO, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, Campbell, Feeding America, Valpak, AARP and Uncle Bob’s Self Storage. The nation’s 230,000 active letter carriers will take the donations to local food banks, pantries and shelters. The food that you donated will go to the pantry in your community. If there isn’t a pantry in your community, the food will go to the next closest community pantry.

Please put your bag of non perishable food out on Saturday, May 12, 2012, prior to mail delivery.

Each year, millions of Americans join the effort to help meet the needs of nearly 50 million Americans who live in families that lack sufficient food. One in seven adults and nearly one-quarter of all children who are hungry and not receiving the basic nutrition they need. Moving into the summer months, 22 million students are at risk of going hungry when the school year ends. For many children, school meals are the only complete and nutritious meals they eat. This is true even in Door County. Our pantries are serving more families than ever, over 400 households per month. Our after school programs are reported hungry children, even after eating lunch at school.

For more information please contact the United Way of Door County at (920) 746-9645 or www.unitedwaydc.com.

Some may remember the days when open mics were plentiful in downtown Sturgeon Bay; The Nautical on Tuesdays and The Red Room on Wednesdays. Something happened, though, along the way; the weekly hosts moved away, The Nautical closed, economic downturn, massive construction and bridge closures all took a hit to the downtown music scene already struggling to survive.

Though Erich Herbst has devotedly continued hosting a Tuesday open mic out at Waterfront Mary’s, the fact remains that a regular live music scene downtown–other than during Steel Bridge SongFest–has all but up and disappeared…. until recently.

pat mAcdonald–Creative Director for The Holiday Music Motel and Steel Bridge SongFest–has always envisioned more live music in the downtown on a regular basis; it’s even part of the mission for The Holiday Music Motel’s business plan.

“I’ve always hoped that venues in the downtown area would pick up where Steel Bridge SongFest left off and have more live music on a regular basis especially considering all that they take in during the week of Steel Bridge, it just seemed entirely feasible that they could earmark some of that money for musicians looking for a few gigs throughout the year.”

Though some of the downtown venues–like The Red Room, Cherry Lanes, The Nautical and now Untitled Used Books–have occasional live music on weekend nights (and Stone Harbor who consistently hosts music on Friday and Saturday nights) no one has committed to hosting a weekly, weekday music event in the downtown area other than The Holiday Music Motel which hosts a weekly original open mic on Thursdays from 7-9pm.

With the return of Chris Aaron to Sturgeon Bay this winter as a permanent resident, mAcdonald was inspired to talk to George Poh of Poh’s Corner Pub about holding a weekly open jam with Chris Aaron as the regularly featured host. Fred Young–of Young Automotive–offered to provide the necessary sound equipment each week. George agreed and Poh’s quickly has become a regular Wednesday showcase of talent from both near and afar and a favorite watering hole for mid-week music enthusiasts.

“This isn’t a normal open mic,” says mAcdonald. “It’s a weekly chance for this little growing community of Sturgeon Bay musicians and songwriters to get together like a loose-knit band and back each other up on each other’s tunes. The group and the repertoire is growing week by week. It’s becoming more and more like an impromptu show that is actually quite entertaining for non musicians too.”

And so it goes to show what a little bit of persistence and community can do to inspire a scene that draws all kinds, from all places, to a small mid-western town such as Sturgeon Bay.

Chris Aaron and Friends (sponsored by The Holiday Music Motel and Fred Young Auto) takes place every Wednesday from 8pm-midnight at Poh’s Corner Pub in Sturgeon Bay.

First Door County Beer Festival June 16

Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin will host a celebration of craft beer and local food at the first Door County Beer Festival June 16. Staged on the warm shores of Lake Michigan, the Door County Beer Festival will feature tastings of more than 120 of the finest craft beers from Wisconsin and the world.

The festival, however, is about much more than great beer. Representatives from O’so, Hinterland, Founder’s, Rush River and Capital Brewery will be on hand for some of the 11 seminars about brewing, artisan cheese, homebrewing, beer and food pairing as well as local food sourcing.

Several of the peninsula’s best restaurants and local producers will be serving food sourced entirely in Wisconsin. Plus, Kyle Cherek, the host of the PBS television show Wisconsin Foodie, will give a special presentation about his show and the burgeoning Wisconsin culinary scene.

“There is so much more depth to Door County than people realize,” Cherek says. “It is like so much of Wisconsin, where we get into a box. But just below the surface or around the corner is what’s really interesting about it.”

The festival will also feature the first Door County Homebrewing Championships and a full day of great live music, including Brooklyn’s Tumbling Bones, on the grounds of the historic Baileys Harbor Town Hall.

It’s all part of a complete weekend on the peninsula that includes the Ride for Nature, a 100-mile bicycle ride along the peninsula’s scenic back roads.

The day culminates with the Fyr Bal Festival, a cultural celebration that includes bonfires and fireworks over Ephraim’s Eagle Harbor.

Only 2,000 tickets will be sold for this event that has the Wisconsin beer community buzzing. To find out more visit www.doorcountybeer.com or contact our founder, John McMahon, at 920.312.3461.
